The history of iPhone in New Zealand.
It was just after midnight on July 11, 2008 when Apple first introduced iPhone to New Zealand, with the iPhone 3G model. That was a fairly significant moment in time.
And New Zealand's very first iPhone 3G was sold to a student, at Vodafone's retail store on Queen street, in Auckland. The iPhone 3G model worked on GSM technology and Vodafone was the only GSM network available in New Zealand at that time.
July 10, 2009 would see the next model of iPhone introduced by Apple, iPhone 3GS, where the "S" part of the model name signified "Speed".
It was about 14 years ago (September 2012) that Apple first introduced the Lightning connector, replacing the earlier 30-pin connector. The new Lightning connector was much smaller, it used just 8 pins and was symmetrical, making it far simpler and easier to use.
The Lightning connector was used to charge iPhone models from that era, all the way up to iPhone 14. Lightning is also used to charge accessories like Apple keyboards and some AirPods models.
Did you know?
Apple took part in development of the USB-C standard, with 18 of their named engineers shown on the 2014 specification. That was from a total of 79 engineers on that spec.
Now, the iPhone 15 range and iPhone 16 range use USB-C to charge, alongside the usual wireless charging. For data transmission on iPhone 16 and iPhone 15, the best USB-C cables to use are those that support USB 3.2 Gen 2, or higher.

All new iPhone Air.
This model of iPhone is different and interesting in a few different ways. iPhone Air is an eSIM only model, and it has a bigger screen size than the iPhone 17 model. iPhone Air uses Apple designed chips for 5G, and Bluetooth and WiFi radios which means better power efficiency amongst other improvements.
If you buy an iPhone Air, remember you can move from a physical SIM using eSIM quick transfer when you set it up.
