TV Streaming

Video streaming has revolutionised the way many of us watch and enjoy TV.
Online services will let you watch movies and shows whenever it’s convenient, compared to a set time with broadcast TV.
Yo can find online streaming and catch-up services with TVNZ, Sky, NEON, Disney, Apple TV, and Netflix.

Most TVs now have streaming Apps built in and streaming services can be broadcast to your TV with a dedicated device too.
For streaming, you want a broadband network with good speed, latency and stability.

You might use a streaming service like these:
  • Netflix
  • NEON
  • Apple TV
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • Disney+
  • ThreeNow
  • YouTube Premium
  • TVNZ+
  • Plex

Gaming

Online gaming is about any type of game that you can play over the internet.
Gamers can easily find opponents of a similar skill level when playing a head-to-head game over the internet. And as a gamer, you can compete in extreme multiplayer games, where dozens of players play an ongoing game in a virtual world, and these are referred to as MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game).

Whether you play on Xbox, Playstation5 or a top end PC rig, you want a great internet connection for gaming with high speed and low latency, and Fibre broadband is your best choice for gaming. In New Zealand we have Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) which is ideal for gaming.

Choose our Fibre Everyday plan or even better choose our Fibre Max plan with Gigabit speeds - and then connect with ethernet to your router.
Fibre Max is our stand-out pick for Gaming.

Downloading

When you download a file, you transfer it from the internet to your computer - or your device.

The most commonly downloaded file types are software, OS updates , or files like game demos, music and video files. Downloading can also mean copying information from any source to a computer or other device, like copying your favourite songs.

Gaming and Streaming FAQs

What broadband speed do I need for 4K video?

You’ll need at least 25 Mbps per stream for smooth 4K playback.
For households with multiple streams or devices, a Fibre 500 or Fibre Max plan is recommended to ensure consistent performance.

To get an accurate idea of your current internet speed, use an ethernet cable to perform a speed test.

What broadband type is best for gaming?

A Fibre connection offers the lowest latency and most reliable experience for gaming. Aim for a ping below 10 ms and, if possible, connect your console or computer using a wired ethernet connection for the most stable performance.

You can still game using Wireless Broadband, where your speeds and ping are likely to be in a different range compared to Fibre broadband. When using Wireless Broadband you'd also want to connect you computer or console with an ethernet cable for the best performance

Can I use my Smart TV without a set-top box?

Yes, you can.
Most modern Smart TVs from LG, Sony, and Samsung include built-in streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and Disney+, so you can stream directly without needing any external box.

Is One NZ a good network for Streaming and Gaming?

Yes, One NZ is a great choice for Streaming and for Gaming. To choose the best network, you'll want an internet provider that has good reliable speed, low latency, and with measurements to prove it.
One NZ has one of the higher performing fibre networks, as shown by the Commerce Commission's Broadband report in 2026, and with the fastest reported speeds on Fibre Max.
For the most reliable and consistent speeds, use an ethernet connection to your gaming machine. If ethernet isn't an option, then look to use a WiFi 6 connection or better, like WiFi 6e or WiFi 7.
