Do your IoT solutions rely on our 2G or 3G network? Now is the time to transition so you stay connected.

This information relates specifically to One NZ IoT customers. Information relating to 3G shutdown for all other customers can be found here.

As the 4G and 5G rollout across Aotearoa increases momentum, it’s now time to look ahead and prepare to farewell the 2G and 3G networks. By the end of December 2025, when you'll be able to access 4G everywhere you currently have 2G and 3G (or 5G, where available), we will switch off these legacy networks.

This means it's time to futureproof your business and start replacing any IoT solutions currently running on these networks with newer technology.

Frequently asked questions

When will the 2G and 3G networks be switched off?

The networks will be switched off in December 2025. To ensure you stay connected, you’ll need to upgrade to a device which is supported by the newer networks.

Why are you switching off the 2G and 3G networks?

These networks use older technology, which has been surpassed by the arrival of newer, more power-efficient technologies with far more capability, such as 4G and 5G. With a limited number of radio frequencies available to us, like many other mobile network providers worldwide, we’re allocating this resource toward the 5G network rollout and expanding our 5G coverage to more New Zealanders. To find out if 4G and 5G is already available in your area, check out our network coverage map.

How will coverage be improved when these networks are switched off?

Switching off the 2G and 3G networks will allow us to bring 5G to more people across Aotearoa. As we continue to roll out 5G, we will repurpose the spectrum to increase 5G coverage.

What other network options are available to us?

We have various network options to meet different business needs, from our 4g & 5g networks to options tailored for IoT, such as CAT-M1 and NB-IoT. You can check out our network coverage map throughout Aotearoa or visit our IoT Network page.

What does "4G-compatible" mean?

4G-compatible refers to a device or module that can connect to the 4G Network and doesn’t rely on 2G or 3G for any functions.

Will our SIM cards be affected?

In most cases, you won’t need a new SIM. Your old one will continue to work the same unless you change to a newer device or module that needs a smaller micro or nano SIM.

What frequency bands will be supported?

At a minimum, 4G Band 28 support will be required. Still, support of additional bands will provide better performance in specific scenarios.

For the foreseeable future, our bands include:
  • 4G Band 1 (2100Mhz)
  • 4G Band 3 (1800Mhz)
  • 4G Band 7 (2600Mhz)
  • 4G Band 28 (700Mhz)
  • 5G n78 (3500Mhz)

Do I need a special device to send text messages after the 2G and 3G networks shut down?

No, you don’t need a special device. You can still send text messages just like before. Our traditional SMS service will continue to work, and we also support newer SMS capabilities for those with VoLTE-enabled devices.
