One Smart Network
It’s here to keep you connected.
Over the past few years, the world has changed how we live, work, play and connect.
So we’ve built a faster, safer, more secure and resilient mobile network for Aotearoa.
We are also proud to be awarded the best mobile network in Aotearoa for the fifth year running, independently tested by global leader in mobile benchmarking, umlaut, part of Accenture, in June 2026.
umlaut offers a more robust and reliable assessment of mobile networks, compared to others that simply rely on user-generated data.
One Smart Network at work
*One NZ Satellite: TXT/MMS in minutes and use data on select apps. Requires eligible phone and plan, and line of sight to the sky. Limited app features. Paid Add-On may apply. Terms, fair use, standard MMS charges and capacity control applies. See one.nz/satellite.
Reliable coverage, data and connection
4G requires a 4G-capable phone or 4G-capable device.
Frequently asked questions - Mobile Networks
What mobile network awards has One New Zealand won?
One NZ has been recognised independently for its network performance.
Most recently in 2026, One NZ was named “Best in Test” mobile network for the fifth consecutive year by umlaut (part of Accenture). This benchmark included on-the-ground drive testing and crowd-sourced data across urban, regional and rural areas.
One NZ won all award categories in a clean sweep for Overall Network Experience, Voice Experience, Data Experience, Crowd Experience, and Reliability Experience.
In earlier years (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) One NZ won similar awards for Best in Test, Best in Data, and Best in Reliability; for these awards and categories One NZ outperformed both Spark and 2Degrees.
These Network accolades serve as independent validation of our network experience that we deliver across voice, data, coverage and reliability, as well as sustainability.

What is One New Zealand's coverage like in rural areas?
Rural coverage is a key focus for One NZ, both in terms of conventional mobile coverage and with next-generation satellite-enabled coverage.
One NZ delivers 4G and 5G mobile coverage to most of where Kiwis live, work and play (99% of those areas and approximately 60% of New Zealand’s geography) and have tools to check coverage at a specific address.
One NZ owns Farmside, a rural broadband and mobile specialist for just this purpose. One NZ also participates in the government-led Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) infrastructure build-out (alongside other providers) to extend mobile coverage in rural locations across New Zealand.
With our Satellite service in partnership with SpaceX/Starlink, One NZ now reaches places outside cell-tower coverage (e.g., remote farm, mountain, water) where traditional mobile signals are weak or absent. Satellite coverage in these areas needs line-of-sight to the sky.
And we cover offshore/coastal zones: one of our public statements notes “up to 85 nautical miles off the coast” via satellite-powered coverage in addition to our 4G network.
So One NZ is delivering best-in-class rural reach, and the satellite mobile offering adds a new layer of reliability and connectivity in remote settings.

Spark NZ say they have the best coverage in Aotearoa, as determined by Open Signal. What’s the difference between Umlaut and Opensignal's research?
In New Zealand, there are multiple independent benchmarking organisations (including umlaut and Opensignal) that evaluate mobile networks, but they use different methodologies and metrics.
Here's a breakdown:
umlaut (Accenture): Their "Best in Test" reports combine drive-testing across urban, regional and rural areas of New Zealand with crowd-sourced data over a defined period.
Tests cover voice call setup, data performance (web browsing, file downloads, streaming), and reliability (ability to stay connected). Example: In 2026 One NZ scored 872/1000 and led on quality, voice, data and reliability.
OOKLA: They publish market reports every 6 months for mobile networks, based on Crowd source data as well. One NZ scored the "Best mobile network" in the 2025 H1 OOKLA Market Report.
Even though One NZ does well in other industry reports, only umlaut results are published due to the comprehensive focus on accuracy in benchmarking, as is seen across their use over 120 markets globally. umlaut embrace extensive drive testing (comparing operators side by side using the same high capability device at the same location at the same time) together with Crowd Source data to give a comprehensive Overall score outcome.

In an international context, how does One NZ compare? Is it world-class?
Yes, One NZ is delivering performance that matches or outpaces many international operators. For example:
So by these measures, One NZ's mobile network is not just “good for NZ” but is competitive in advanced markets globally.
- According to the most recent Ookla Speedtest Connectivity Score for New Zealand, One NZ recorded 74.58, highest among NZ mobile providers. See Ookla
- Our independent audits (umlaut) show scores in the 850+ out of 1000 range for NZ market, a very strong result compared to global benchmarks. Umlaut (part of Accenture) class any network >850 in the very Good Category. See the Channel Life article on the 2026 award and International Scoring for Mobile Networks
- The satellite mobile innovation (direct-to-cell via SpaceX) is cutting-edge internationally (few operators globally currently deploy it). Gadget Review
So by these measures, One NZ's mobile network is not just “good for NZ” but is competitive in advanced markets globally.
