VoLTE voice calling over 4G and 5G
When you start using a VoLTE-capable phone, you'll notice the amazing clear call quality, fewer dropped calls and the quick call setup time.
Understanding VoLTE
VoLTE stands for 'Voice over Long Term Evolution', which is part of 4G and 5G mobile network communication standards. So it's a more modern technology, and it is much improved on the older cellular technology that it replaces.
If you have a VoLTE-capable phone, voice calls will work on 4G and 5G networks here in NZ. Enabling 4G voice-calling means better connectivity to the mobile network and much clearer call quality.
VoLTE technology is a core part of the 4G and 5G standards and will continue to be used well into the future.
What VoLTE technology means for you
VoLTE works over 4G and 5G to ensure call continuity and a smooth experience. You'll experience crystal-clear sound on calls (reduced background noise) and a quicker call connection and fewer dropped calls. There'll also be less disruption when you simultaneously download content, browse social media and receive calls.
How to get enabled for VoLTE 4G and 5G voice calling
Check your 4G and 5G network coverage
- You can easily check 4G and 5G network coverage using our mobile coverage maps.
- One NZ will continue to roll out more coverage over time, so if you are not within coverage yet, keep checking.
Check your phone VoLTE and/or VoLTE roaming
Check the list of VoLTE/VoLTE roaming devices that are supported in New Zealand. Keep in mind the following:
- For iPhone users, VoLTE is supported on all models from iPhone 6 onwards
- For Android users, VoLTE is supported on many phones as shown on the list below
Check your phone software
- Ensure that your phone software (e.g. iOS for Apple or Android for Samsung) is up-to-date.
- If needed, you can prompt this update yourself in your phone settings.
Check your phone settings
- Ensure that your phone settings are enabled for 4G/5G data and/or VoLTE.
- NOTE: If you still can’t connect to VoLTE, try turning your phone on and off again while in an area with good mobile coverage. In some instances, your SIM may need to be enabled for VoLTE, so please contact us for support if this applies to you.
Where VoLTE is available today
One NZ customers can access 4G and 5G voice calling anywhere in New Zealand that offers 4G or 5G coverage.
VoLTE while roaming overseas
VoLTE roaming is becoming the main way to make voice calls while travelling overseas and we are enabling this with an increasing number of our roaming partners.
This will let you experience enhanced VoLTE quality while travelling overseas. However, you will need to check the phone list below to ensure that your phone supports VoLTE roaming in addition to VoLTE.
Most phones do but there are a few exceptions as noted.
2G/3G roaming shutdown and VoLTE roaming
Many overseas networks have already shut down their 2G/3G networks and many more will do so in the near future. All 2G/3G networks in Australia, U.S., Puerto Rico, Singapore and Taiwan have already shutdown. New Zealand, China, Iceland, Israel, Nigeria and Norway all have announced closures for December 2025.
This means that you must have a VoLTE roaming-enabled phone to make or receive 4G/5G calls in these destinations.

One NZ’s 3G network shutdown
Please note that even if your phone doesn’t work for VoLTE roaming while overseas, you will still be able to use 4G data and text.
VoLTE/VoLTE roaming capable devices
One NZ has tested and approved a range of VoLTE and VoLTE roaming capable devices as listed below.
If your phone was not purchased from One NZ (for example via another network operator, parallel importer or overseas) but it is the same phone model as listed below, then it is likely to operate correctly although we cannot guarantee this.
If your phone model is not listed below then we cannot tell how it will work for mobile services in NZ or while roaming overseas.

Frequently asked questions
Is VoLTE enabled by default?
Older iPhone models may need to have VoLTE switched on manually. To do this, look under Settings>Mobile>Mobile Data Options>Enable 4G Voice and Data. Newer models have VoLTE enabled by default.
For Samsung handset users, VoLTE is set to be on by default for VoLTE capable devices. You will see “VoLTE” shown at the top of their screen when it is available.

Is VoLTE the same as HD Voice?
HD Voice is also known as "Wideband audio", and it's sometimes called 'advanced calling'. HD Voice works by extending the frequency range of the sound transmitted for phone calls.
VoLTE is a newer standard, that incorporates the HD Voice standard, specifically using the AMR-WB audio codec. While it's technically different, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) also provides crystal clear calling, delivered over 4G and 5G.
