VoLTE technology - voice calling over 4G and 5G
When you start using a VoLTE-capable phone, you'll notice the amazing clear call quality, fewer dropped calls and the quick call setup time.
Understanding VoLTE
VoLTE stands for 'Voice over Long Term Evolution', which is part of mobile high-speed wireless communication standards. If you have a VoLTE-capable phone, voice calls will work on 4G and 5G networks here in NZ and on of overseas networks, too.
Until recently, voice calls were made over 2G and 3G networks, with 4G typically used for data transmission. Enabling 4G voice calling means better connectivity to the mobile network and much clearer call quality.
VoLTE technology is a core part of the 4G and 5G standards and will continue to be used well into the future.
VoLTE roaming lets you make VoLTE calls when roaming to another network operator that supports VoLTE calling.
What VoLTE technology means for you.
VoLTE works over 4G and 5G to ensure call continuity and a smooth experience. You'll experience crystal-clear sound on calls (reduced background noise) and a quicker call connection and fewer dropped calls. There'll also be less disruption when simultaneously downloading content, browsing social media and receiving calls. Seamless handover to 3G is also supported until March 2025.
How to get enabled for 4G Calling
- Check whether you are within 4G voice calling/VoLTE coverage, using this 4G coverage map. One NZ will continue to roll out coverage over time, so if you are not within coverage yet, keep checking. VoLTE roaming is already enabled in certain destinations, and this coverage will continue to expand over time.
- Check whether your phone supports VoLTE and/or VoLTE roaming. A list of devices supported in New Zealand is below (NB. A small number of these models will work in NZ but will not work when roaming).
- For iPhone users, VoLTE is supported on models from iPhone 6 and newer, all the way up to iPhone 15.
- For Android users, VoLTE is supported on phones like S9 and newer.
- Full list of all devices available below.
- Ensure your firmware is updated. If needed, you can prompt this update yourself in your phone settings.
- Ensure VoLTE is enabled in your phone settings. Once VoLTE is enabled, if your device is also VOLTE Roaming capable (outlined in below list), this will be automatically enabled.
Note: If you still can’t connect to VoLTE, try turning your phone on and off again while in an area where you have good mobile coverage. In some instances, your SIM may need to be enabled for VoLTE, so please contact us for support if this applies to you.
Where VoLTE is available today
One NZ customers can access 4G voice calling anywhere in New Zealand that offers 4G or 5G coverage.
VoLTE while roaming
VoLTE roaming is already enabled with some of our overseas roaming partners, so you can experience enhanced VoLTE quality while overseas, as long as you have a VoLTE roaming capable phone, and the corresponding settings and software update (see above steps).
Please note that not all VoLTE capable phones, which connect to 4G networks while in NZ, are also VoLTE roaming capable are iPhone 7, 8 and X, Samsung S9 and S10, and Note 8, 9 and 10. Please check your phone model in the list below.
One NZ’s 3G network shutdown
One NZ has announced the shutdown of their 3G network which you can read more about.
2G/3G roaming shutdown and VoLTE roaming
Many overseas operators, including some of our international roaming partners, have already shut down or started shutting down their 2G/3G networks. Roaming partners in Australia, the United States, Taiwan, and Singapore have already done so, with more to follow in the next few years. This means you will need a VoLTE roaming-enabled phone to make or receive calls or TXTs in these destinations.

Frequently asked questions
Is VoLTE enabled by default?
For Samsung handset users, VoLTE is set to be on by default for VoLTE capable devices. Customers will see “VoLTE” at the top of their screen.
Is VoLTE the same as HD Voice?
HD Voice is also known as Wideband audio, and sometimes called 'advanced calling'. HD Voice works by extending the frequency range of the sound transmitted for phone calls.
