Coverage descriptions explained:
Good: You can generally expect a reliable connection for making calls, sending texts, and using data.*
Moderate: Your network experience is expected to be between 'Good' and 'Limited'. Your actual experience may vary within this range.*
Limited: Calls, texts and basic data can work but you are more likely to have trouble staying connected and experience slower speeds.*
*Other factors can affect your ability to connect to the network.
The coverage levels shown are indicative of outdoor coverage. Your ability to connect to the network may vary depending on your exact location, the phone (or device) being used, whether you are moving, network factors (such as the number of users simultaneously using a mobile tower), and your environment (e.g. vegetation, buildings and even the weather).
General mobile coverage map information:
- The mobile coverage map indicates the areas where you are expected to have the ability to connect to a mobile network when outdoors. It is based on technical data to predict where it should be possible to connect to the network and where indicated, to estimate how good that connection could be.
- The map provides general guidance on where the One NZ network and outdoor coverage are available. It does not guarantee that you will be able to connect or that you will experience the predicted quality of connection.
- The coverage map does not apply if you are indoors. If you are indoors, the building construction and your location within the building may also affect your experience. For example, you are more likely to have difficulty connecting to the network or a poor experience if you are inside a building with thick walls and few windows, or in a basement.
- The mobile coverage map does not apply to phones (or devices) that are not properly configured or that are incompatible with New Zealand mobile networks. For the best experience, your phone (or device) must be fully compatible with our network. It is especially important to check if your phone (or device) was purchased second hand or refurbished, purchased overseas, through an international website, or was not purchased from a New Zealand network provider.
- To connect to our 4G and 5G networks, you need to have a phone (or device) compatible with our 4G/5G network, be in an area with 4G/5G coverage, and have an appropriate mobile plan.
- For phones to get the best coverage in rural areas and inside large buildings in urban areas, they need to support 4G using Band 28 / LTE 700 frequency. Most phones do, but a small number of phones from overseas or from parallel importers may not. To check your phone’s capability please free text “3G” to 550 to find out if your phone is ready for our 3G shutdown including 4G Band 28 / LTE 700.
How to get fast 5G data speeds on your phone?
To get the fast data speed of 5G, you'll need to be in an area with 5G coverage, have a 5G phone with 5G activated, or use a 5G modem from One NZ.
How do I get the best voice calling quality on my phone?
VoLTE technology enables voice calling on 4G and 5G phones using our 4G network. When you start using a VoLTE-capable phone, you'll notice the amazing call quality, fewer dropped calls, and quick call setup times. To use VoLTE, you'll need a VoLTE-capable mobile phone. This may also require a software update to enable VoLTE on your phone. See our list of VoLTE-capable phones to learn more and understand what to expect with software updates.
How to get the best coverage for calling at your home or your work.
WiFi Calling is similar to VoLTE and works over any reliable WiFi connection. It's great at home, work, or anywhere else where coverage may not be ideal.

Does your phone work on the One NZ network?
To ensure the best network experience, it's crucial that your phone is fully compatible with our network. This is especially important if your phone or device was purchased overseas, through an international website, or from a parallel importer who may not have verified its compatibility with New Zealand's mobile networks. For optimal performance on 4G, check that your phone supports the following 4G bands:
- 4G Band 1 (LTE 2100MHz).
- 4G Band 3 (LTE 1800MHz).
- 4G Band 7 (LTE 2600MHz).
- 4G Band 8 (LTE 900MHz).
- 4G Band 28 (LTE 700MHz).
Our 5G network operates on the following frequency bands: n8 (900 MHz), n7 (2600 MHz), and n78 (3500 MHz). If your device does not support all of these frequency bands then you may not be able to connect to our 5G network in the entire area shown in our coverage map.
