Got a question?
What is WiFi Calling?
WiFi Calling lets you make and receive calls over WiFi when there’s a weak mobile phone signal, either in New Zealand or overseas.
All devices connected to the WiFi Calling service will also send and receive texts over WiFi. Within New Zealand, all calls will try to connect to the cellular (mobile) network first, and then try to use WiFi if the mobile signal is too weak. But if you’re overseas, then WiFi Calling will be automatically preferred.
How do I set up WiFi calling?
To turn on WiFi Calling, simply follow these steps:
First, check if your phone supports WiFi Calling, by checking the phone-list shown on this page.
Make sure you’ve updated your phone to use the latest software.
Turn on WiFi Calling on your phone - in your settings.
Connect to a WiFi network.
Android: Go to your smartphone's settings, search for WiFi Calling and turn it on or off (many Android devices list WiFi Calling under Call Settings).
OPPO: Turn on WiFi Calling in Settings > SIM card & mobile data > select SIM1/SIM2 > WiFi calling
iPhone: Turn on WiFi Calling in Settings > Phone > WiFi Calling. Visit the Apple website for information about how to turn on WiFi Calling on your iPhone for detailed steps.
Is WiFi Calling going to be available on my smartphone?
We're working with phone manufacturers to determine exactly which devices will be enabled for WiFi Calling and when.
Newer-model One NZ-bought VoLTE phones and devices can use WiFi Calling. Some older model VoLTE phones such as iPhone 6 or parallel imported smartphones for example won't be able to connect due to the manufacturer settings. A non-One NZ iPhone 6S or newer model running iOS 15 should work with a One NZ SIM card.
To check if your phone can use WiFi Calling, check out our WiFi Calling compatible list. New phones will be listed as they are released for sale.
Note: WiFi Calling will became available for One NZ OneBusiness customers from December 8, 2021.
What if my phone won’t work with WiFi Calling, what can I do?
You may need to upgrade your phone to a newer device, and there will be a range of phones that will be WiFi Calling enabled, including more affordable devices. Please visit our online shop to check out new phones, and we offer a range of interest free payment options.
Does WiFi Calling cost extra?
There's no extra charge for enabling WiFi Calling if you're a One NZ customer. All calls you make use minutes from your plan allowance as usual, and international or special calling rates apply, and texts (SMS/MMS or TXT/PXT) messages will be charged as usual. Check your phone plan for more details.
What is a good WiFi Connection?
WiFi Calling requires a WiFi connection with at least 100-120 kbps bandwidth to ensure a better experience.
Note: Local interference and WiFi traffic load may impact the WiFi Calling experience at certain times.
My WiFi connection isn't great; what options are available?
If you have WiFi connection issues, you may want to check out SuperWifi. Customers on eligible broadband plans can get SuperWifi for wall-to-wall WiFi guaranteed or a $100 broadband credit.
If you're using an ADSL or VDSL connection that offers a weak WiFi signal, then upgrading to fibre or wireless broadband may be the best option for you. Please contact us to discuss your individual situation further.
How will broadband data usage be charged when I'm using WiFi Calling?
Broadband data is needed to use WiFi Calling. Costs to use WiFi Calling will depend on whether you have a broadband connection with One NZ, in addition to a mobile plan with One NZ.
For One NZ broadband customers (fibre, wireless broadband, VDSL, ADSL): You will not be charged for broadband data used with WiFi Calling, which means you will only be charged once via your One NZ mobile phone plan. This means you can still use WiFi Calling even if you have run out of broadband data in your bundle (even if you’re not on an Unlimited data plan).
If you use any other provider for your broadband connection: You will be incurring charges for WiFi and broadband data with that provider. This applies to Farmside customers and any companies using the One NZ network via a wholesale agreement.
Will my phone drop out when it uses WiFi Calling?
If you're using a VoLTE registered phone and are connected to the One NZ 4G or 5G network, your call should automatically transfer between WiFi and the mobile signal, which means you shouldn't get cut off while you're on the phone.
A non-VoLTE phone will use WiFi Calling in suitable conditions, but not hand in and out of cellular, so may cut out. For example: when calls try to transfer between the 2G/3G network and WiFi, they will cut out.
If you're making an important phone call, we recommend ensuring you'll be connected for the duration of the call to either: the 4G mobile network, or a WiFi network. You can find the coverage area on our website: one.nz/network/coverage/
I bought my phone overseas. Can I use WiFi Calling?
Newer model One NZ-bought VoLTE phones can use WiFi Calling. Phones or devices bought from third parties or other NZ telecommunications companies might not be compatible with WiFi Calling. A non-One NZ iPhone 6S or newer model running iOS 15 should work with a One NZ SIM, but we can't guarantee this.
Can I use WiFi Calling to call the emergency services?
You can make emergency calls using WiFi Calling, but the phone will first try to use the mobile network (either One NZ or another mobile provider) before it uses WiFi Calling.
When you are on Flight mode with WiFi turned on, and your phone is enabled to use WiFi Calling:
iOS: you will be prompted to turn off Aeroplane Mode (Flight Mode) to continue the call over WiFi.
Android: the device will switch off Aeroplane Mode (Flight Mode) and continue the call over WiFi.
Will I receive Emergency Mobile Alerts with WiFi Calling?
If you're using WiFi Calling and have One NZ mobile coverage, you will receive the Emergency Mobile Alert. But if you're using WiFi Calling in an area where you don’t have One NZ mobile coverage or Airplane mode is turned on, you won’t receive the Emergency Mobile Alert.
For more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert, please visit the Civil Defence website.
There is also a list of Emergency Mobile Alert capable phones on this Government website.
How will I know if WiFi Calling is being used?
An icon will be displayed on your device, at the top of your screen.
Can I use WiFi calling overseas?
Yes you can.
Just connect to any available - and turn on WiFi Calling to be able to call and TXT as if you are still in New Zealand. You don't need to turn on Roaming to use WiFi Calling so you won't be charged roaming rates however your minutes and TXTs used over WiFi Calling will come out of your mobile plan allowance.
For example if you're on a Prepay or Pay Monthly plan and call a NZ number using WiFi Calling while roaming overseas, this will come out of your plan allowance. If you call a local number in the country you're travelling in, you'll be charged the standard cost of calling an international number, like you would at home.
If you don’t have an active Prepay plan and still use WiFi Calling while overseas, you’ll be charged standard Prepay rates.
Please note: Calls will drop once you leave WiFi coverage and you will need to turn on Roaming to make a call.
