Can you use One NZ Mobiles overseas?

Some of our roaming partners are shutting down their 3G networks. If you are travelling to Australia, the US, Singapore or Taiwan, here are some important things about your roaming services.

What do you need to know before roaming with your One NZ Mobile?

Will my phone work abroad?

The more frequencies your phone supports, the more countries it can work in. Find out which frequencies your phone supports in our device guides . Here's some good info on what mobile frequencies are in use in which countries .

How much will it cost for calls, TXTs and data when I'm overseas?

This can vary according to the plan you're on and where you're going so the best place to check is in My One NZ, call us on 777 or check:

Pre-flight roaming checklist

  • Note down your voicemail PIN , you'll need this if you check voice mail from overseas
  • Remember if you have any diverts in place, as these could run up charges, turn them off if need be
  • Check your phone's settings and decide if you want to turn off automatic downloads (data use) i.e. emails, calendar items, Facebook notifications, Twitter and location apps like Swarm.

What do you need to know about using your One NZ Mobile once you arrive overseas?

We will send you a TXT when you land. This confirms that you're connected and "roaming", it also includes helpful information and links about your destination.

  • The local telco's name will appear on your phone instead of ours.
  • You may be charged for receiving calls.
  • You may be charged for checking voicemail.
  • TXTs are 160 characters, if your message is longer you will be sending 2 TXTs.
  • Check on the dialling methods (i.e. making local calls in your destination or calling home) For example, calling an NZ number would be +6421 xxx xxxx instead of the usual 021 xxx xxxx.
  • If you're using an iPad, you can't receive TXT alerts about data use, so be sure to check My One NZ regularly.
  • If you need us, you call simply call 777 from most countries, as normal.
  • You can always buy more calling minutes, TXTs or data in My One NZ when you're overseas.

How do I turn on/off roaming on your One NZ Mobile?

You can check to see if roaming is enabled for your plan in the My One NZ app. If you need to turn it on, you can do that in the app.

Want to turn roaming off? Give us a quick call on +64 9 355 2007 if you're overseas, or 777 if you haven't left yet.

You don't need to turn off roaming when you get home, we'll automatically detect you're back and you'll return to your normal plan use.
