Mobile | 'Emergency Calls Only' or 'No Service' message on my mobile

This article contains steps to try and resolve the 'No Service' or 'Emergency Calls Only' message issue that you may see on your handset.

Before you begin

Your mobile phone always tries to stay connected to the network.  If it loses connection, it often shows a 'No Service' or 'Emergency Calls Only' message on your screen.

Possible causes

  • SIM card not correctly inserted in your phone - check your phone using our online Device Guides .
  • No Fixed dialling type feature activated on your phone.
  • SIM card is not active.
  • Not enough Prepay credit - although you shouldn't normally see a message like this if your credit is zero.
  • The Network is down.

Steps

Follow the steps below to try to fix the No Service' or 'Emergency Calls Only' message that you are seeing on your mobile device.

  1. Check if other people around you using our network are getting the same message.
If they are, there is likely an issue with the signal in your area. If the issue isn't already appearing on our Network Status page , please give us a call from any phone and let us know
If the issue is only with your mobile, continue to step 2
  2. If you are able to, while your mobile is on:
    • Remove the battery
    • Wait for 30 seconds and then put the battery back in
    • Turn your phone on.
Please note: You cannot remove the battery from all mobiles - if you cannot remove the battery, simply turn your mobile off for 30 seconds and then turn it back on.
If the message still appears, continue to step 3
  3. Try your SIM in another mobile if you have one available
If the message doesn't appear in the other mobile, there is an issue with your mobile.  Please use the Device Repair guide
The message still appears, or you do not have another mobile.  Continue to Step 4
  4. If only your SIM card is affected, give our service team a call , and we'll check it out from our end.
