The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) has delivered better broadband coverage and speeds to rural areas of New Zealand, bringing rural broadband to around 275,000 rural households.
This initiative has also extended cellphone coverage in New Zealand to a total of 125,700 square kilometres.
RBI broadband services are delivered over our 4G mobile network . This Rural service is referred to as either Rural Broadband or Fixed-Wireless Broadband, and sometimes referred to as FWA (Fixed Wireless Access).
Using our mobile network allows this rural service to be provided in remote locations where traditional fixed services couldn't be delivered, or where only expensive satellite services are available. RBI broadband aimed to offer a peak downstream speed of 5Mbps or better. And we know that many customers receive speeds significantly faster than this.
