About the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI)

The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) has brought better broadband coverage and speeds to rural areas of New Zealand, delivering broadband to around 275,000 rural households.
This initiative has also extended cellphone coverage in New Zealand to a total of 125,700 square kilometres.

RBI broadband services are delivered over the 4G mobile network . This Rural service is referred to as either Rural Wireless Broadband or Fixed-Wireless Broadband.
Using the wireless mobile network allows the service to be provided in remote locations where traditional fixed services cannot be delivered or where only expensive satellite services are available. RBI broadband will offer a peak downstream speed of 5Mbps or better. Many customers receive speeds significantly faster than this.
