An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number sequence used to identify every device that is connected to the Internet. It's like a street address for your computer.
Types of IP addresses
There are two types of IP addresses:
- Static: Your IP address remains the same every time you log on to the internet
- Dynamic: A new IP address is assigned by the network every time you log on to the internet
When you log off, the IP you were using is made available to other devices. This helps prevent congestion on the network.
Most IP addresses are assigned dynamically.
Static IPs can be useful in some cases, but they are not needed for you to enjoy an uninterrupted and fast internet experience.
Do I need a Static IP address?
Required
You need a Static IP if you want to use your broadband connection to:
- Host websites
- Host email, FTP or DNS servers
- Create Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
- Run IP-PBX or any system which is designed to receive high quality audio and video
In each of these cases, you need other computers to be able to find your computer easily, every single time they log onto the internet. A static IP eliminates any confusion and ensures a quick and hassle-free connection.
You may also need a static IP for licensing requirements. For example, if you have a Financial Terminal set up to your computer or if you use a licensed application which needs to be monitored at all times.
Not required
If you use the internet for any of the following reasons, you don't need a Static IP address:
- Browse the internet
- Send and receive emails
- Download and upload files
- Chatting through an instant messaging service
- Running an FTP - provided it doesn't allow other users to connect to it or it is an intranet-based server which is only accessibly by specific users on the network
