Set up and connect to WiFi

WiFi is the wireless connection between your device and your modem/router or mesh.
Devices that use WiFi are usually portable, like your phone or your laptop.

WiFi provides a fast and cable-free way for your devices to connect to the internet, especially if you use a Mesh router.

Setting up WiFi in your home.

To improve your WiFi stability and speed where you most commonly use it, you'll first need to understand your home environment

Interference.

Many things can interfere or weaken your WiFi signal quality and it may impact your connection and speed experience.

Make sure your WiFi signal is not trying to go through bathrooms or kitchens to reach your devices.

Keep your modem/router or WiFi devices out of cupboards, patch panels, away from electrical and kitchen appliances such as fridges and microwaves, away from mirrors, baby monitors, cordless phones, hot water cylinders and blue tooth speakers to reduce interference.

Look out for internal building materials made from metal, concrete, marble, tiles or brick, as WiFi cannot penetrate these materials.

Usage.

Your modem/router is best placed in the same room where you will use WiFi the most.

  • If you're not in the same room as your Fibre ONT, HFC ONT, or DSL jack-point, then your WiFi speed is likely to be lower. The WiFi signal strength becomes lower the further away you are. You may want a mesh WiFi system to provide WiFi coverage throughout the home, or use an Ethernet cable instead.
  • If you're gaming or streaming via TV, we recommend connecting with an Ethernet cable for the most reliable connection and consistent speed.

Position your hardware.

Optimise your WiFi performance by positioning your modem/router following our simple principles of Out, Up and Open.

Out Up Open

  • Out of cupboards.
  • Out of packed shelves.
  • Out from behind TV's.
  • Out from under desks.
  • Out of the kitchen.
  • Out from far edges of the home.

  • High away from obstacles.
  • High away from cluttered spaces.
  • High for a clear line of sight outward.

  • Away from blocking objects.
  • Away from electrical appliances.
  • Less interference in open air.
  • Clearer air for signal to get out .
  • If you have Wireless Broadband, we recommend placing your modem near a window and out in the open. Try a few different places around the house to help find the best spot.

Help me to:

Connect to WiFi

  1. On your device, click on the WiFi symbol and select your WiFi name.
  2. Enter your WiFi password to connect to WiFi.

Tip: Check on the back or bottom to find your modem WiFi Network Name and Wireless Key code/Password.

Connect to WiFi using WPS.

WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) is a simple, semi-automatic process to connect a WPS-enabled device without needing a password.
Our modems have this functionality and it makes it easy to connect printers and other hardware to your WiFi.
Each modem will have slightly different steps, so please refer to your modem user guide. Our modem user guides are found here .

  • Check your device WiFi is ON
  • Enable WPS mode on your modem
  • Find the WiFi network listed on your device and follow the onscreen instructions

Change your WiFi name and password.

Our modems include a unique and secure WiFi name and password.

To personalise your WiFi name and/or password, we recommend you use a password that is more than 8 characters, has a mix of upper and lower case letters and includes numbers. This makes it more secure and harder to guess.

To change your WiFi name (SSID) and password (WLAN Key), you will need to access your modem's web management  page.
We recommend that you check your modem user guide for step-by-step instructions and choose WPA2 to secure your WiFi.
Once you have changed your settings, be sure to write them down and to update all the devices that connect to your WiFi.
