At One NZ, we have been strongly supportive and expressed our desire to connect to the IP Filtering service because blocking child sex abuse sites is highly consistent with our branding and customers' interests. Like our cyber bullying initiative, we will take steps to keep our customers safe online.
A few points:
- We will be using the Department of Internal Affairs IP Filter to block access to known child sex abuse sites, with our traffic going via the filter they maintain.
- This IP Filter blocks illegal child sex abuse sites, not porn sites or those that are of questionable taste. We're saying that we will take this step in the interests of our customers, many of whom are families.
- If the Department of Internal Affairs were to block a site that was legitimate, people can register this with the Department of Internal Affairs and they can unblock it. The Department of Internal Affairs have service standards where they have to respond within a few hours to address such complaints.
- The filter does not slow internet performance ? we trialled this and found no discernible difference.
- If the filter was misused we would be able to disconnect from it.
We appreciate that some people see this as the thin end of the wedge on internet censorship ? One NZ take the view that this is about looking after our customers and blocking access to content which is illegal and unquestionably harmful.
