This article covers the most common questions and answers about the B818 modem (e.g. how to set up your modem).
From 5 September 2023, B818 Modem will be retired.
Set up
Log into the web management portal
What you'll need:
- A computer that is connected to the modem either through Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable
- The username and password for your modem (found on the bottom of most of our modems)
- To ensure your modem is plugged in and powered on
If you're using a modem we did not supply, or your modem isn't listed above, you'll need to refer to your modem's user guide for assistance in accessing the web managment page.
Steps
- Open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.1
- Enter your Password (the password can be found on the bottom of your modem)
- On your keyboard, press Enter
The web management page appears. If you cannot open the web management page, please check the following:
- The power is on
- Either your computer's Wi-Fi is on or it is directly connected to the modem with an Ethernet cable
- Your browser is set to automatically get an IP address and DNS server address.
If you still can't open the page, please give us a call
- we'll run through some other checks on our side.
Install a SIM card

What you'll need:
- x1 4G Wireless Broadband modem
- x1 SIM
Steps

At the bottom of your modem, find and open the SIM Card cover

Turn your SIM card so it matches the diagram above the slot

Gently push the SIM into the slot until it clicks in place
Tip: You can see the SIM is correctly inserted when it stays securely in the slot and it appears level with the area around it
Using the B818
B818 Lights
Light | Description |
Power | Power light If on, power is on, if Off power is off |
Status | Green light means modem is online Red light means modem is offline |
LAN | Means whether a Cabled LAN device is attached or not Light on means device attached, light off means no device attached |
WiFi | Means whether WiFi is on or off |
Mode | Blue light means connected via 3G Cyan light means connected via 4G |
Change your Wi-Fi name or password
When you log into your modem's web management page for the first time, the setup wizard gives you the option to change the Wi-Fi name and password.
Steps
- Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1

From the top-menu, click Wi-Fi Settings
The Wi-Fi Basic Settings screen appears

Optional step: Click 5GHz preferred to have devices automatically switch between 5GHz and 2Ghz
This option combines the two Wi-Fi bands into one for simplicity.
Alternatively, you can separate them out into 2.4GHz and 5Ghz Bands. Separating them out means that the Wi-Fi names and passwords can be configured individually

In the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi sections, update your Wi-Fi name and Wi-Fi password

Click Save
Change modem password
Please note: The first time you go to your modem's web management page, you will be asked to create a new modem password.
Steps
- Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1

From the top-menu, click Advanced

From the left-side menu, click the System option and select Modify Password

Complete the required fields

Click Save
Change APN or 3G/4G preference settings
You can manually choose to:
Connect your Wireless and Rural Broadband modems to our 3G or 4G network
Note: You cannot make changes to your settings while your home phone is in use.
Steps
Select the setting which needs to be updated: Choose 3G / 4G as preferred network

From the top-menu, click Network Settings

From the left-side menu, expand the Mobile Network option and select Mobile Network Searching
From the Preferred Network Mode drop-down menu, select the required option:
- 4G preferred
- 4G only

3G only
- 4G preferred

From the Network search mode drop-down menu, select Auto (it's usually selected by default)
Note: You should only select Manual if advised by our staff

Click Save
Change your Wi-Fi channel
What is a Wi-Fi channel?
A Wi-Fi channel is like a lane on the road - the less cars in your lane, the closer to the speed limit you can go.
When you're on a channel which is not used by many devices it can help you experience:
- Less disconnections
- Faster browsing and download speeds
When should I change my Wi-Fi channel?
You should consider changing your Wi-Fi channel when you:
- Have checked the Wi-Fi Analyser and can see there are a lot of other devices in your area using the same channel
- Experience slow browsing speeds when using Wi-Fi but normal speeds when connected using an Ethernet cable
- Have a poor Wi-Fi signal

From the top-menu, click Advanced

From the left-side menu, select Wi-Fi Advanced Settings

From the Channel drop-down menu, select the required channels
- Click Save
Troubleshooting
Factory Reset
Option 1 - Reset button
Power on the router and use a sharp-pointed object (for example a needle) to press and hold the reset hole.
Option 2 - Web management page
- Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1

Enter your password

From the top-menu, click Advanced

From the left-side menu, expand the Systems option then select Reset

Click Reset
Please note: this will revert your modem settings back to their factory defaults

Upgrade modem firmware
- Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1

From the top-menu, click Advanced

From the left-side menu, click Updates
- From the options below, select how you'd like to update your firmware
Automatically

Enable the Overnight updates toggle

Click Check for Updates
Manually

Click Local Update
The Local Update popup appears

Browse for the downloaded file on your computer and then click Update
