What is a reverse record?
A reverse record allows people to find out what domain name is associated with an IP address, even if the IP is all they have. For example if you had the IP address 203.97.33.210 and wanted to find out the domain associated with it, if the IP address has a reverse record you can find this out. The example IP address does have a reverse, which points to pop.clear.net.nz.
Reverse records are normally used by people setting up their own mail server; in order to fight spam mail, some servers will not accept email sent from another server which has no reverse record or a reverse record that doesn't match the sender's domain.
By default Clearnet IP addresses all have reverse records which show our company name, as it is required by the industry standard for every IP address to have at least one reverse.
How do I arrange a reverse record?
If you are running your own mail server and need to have the reverse record show your server details, please Contact Us with the server's IP address and the name you would like to have added.
Please note that we are unable to remove the default reverse record.
