Each phone requires a certain amount of power to ring. As the current is shared between each device, if the number of phones on the line is more than 5, the amount of current reaching each device may not be enough to allow a ring.

An alternative is cordless phones that have only the main base station actually plugged into the phone line - the other handsets connect wirelessly.
