Roaming | Sending TXTs

This article describes how TXTing works while you are Roaming

How does TXTing while Roaming works?

You can send TXT messages just as you would in New Zealand. But you must send your message to numbers in the international format (e.g. +6421 to other mobiles on our network).

Most networks will allow you to send and receive TXT messages while you're travelling.  receiving a TXT is free, yet sending a TXT message when roaming costs $0.92 per TXT, or it will be covered under Daily Roaming or a Prepay Roaming bundle.

What happens if your TXTs won't send?

The number one cause of this is a setting in your phone called the Message Centre Number - sometimes called the Service Centre Number. Each phone has this setting in a different place but generally most phones have it under Messages>settings>SMS settings>Msg Centre.

If you can't find this setting on your phone use one of our Device Guides for your phone. Once there the number should be +6421600600.

Back in NZ we have our network set up to allow your TXT through even if this number's not right, but overseas networks aren't - it has to be correct or your TXT won't go anywhere.

How to update the message centre number?

The message centre number for the iPhone is entered via a handset code, not via the menu.

To update the message centre number:

  • Enter *5005*7672* 6421600600# and press the Call button (i.e. as if keying the code in as a phone number and making a call to it)
  • Press the Dismiss button when it appears on screen
  • The iPhone will display a confirmation message, e.g. "Setting Succeeded" or a similar message.

The same check applies though, is it affecting just you, just one number or other people with you on the same network.
