This article is to help you to install an ADSL line filter (as shown right). This is needed to filter the incoming signals to separate voice and data, helping to avoid interference with your phone service, while at the same time taking care to keep a clean signal level for your broadband connection.
It is part of the self-install modem package you received containing the following items:
- ADSL modem/ router
- Power supply for the modem/ router
- ADSL modem phone cable
- ADSL line filter(s)
- Ethernet (UTP) cable
- USB cable
- CD-ROM (optional USB drivers and user guides)
Any of your equipment sharing the phone line, other than ADSL modems should be connected to a phone line jackpoint via a line filter. Examples of such non-ADSL equipment that must connect through a line filter are:
- Phone handset
- Fax machine
- Caller display unit
- Other devices that have an integral modem (such as SKY Digital decoder or other set-top boxes)

There are two ways to connect the items in the self-installation kit to a phone line.

- Plug the phone cable into the phone (or any other non-ADSL phone device)
- Plug the phone jack of the cable into the phone port of the ADSL microfilter
